Our Recent Stay: Hammock Cove Antigua

This boutique property located in Antigua is a perfect choice for a relaxing getaway or a romantic celebration. For agent Allison Barrett, most of her travels with her husband have been the busier kind. The wake up first thing to get the absolute most out of your day kind, all so you you don’t miss a thing on the long must-see list. When chatting through what they wanted for their honeymoon and what was going to make this trip different they knew we wanted to slow it down, way down. They wanted movie quality romantic vibes including late mornings, a beach chair buzz and evening strolls to slow dinners. This resort was exactly all of those things done perfectly and more. Read below for Allison’s recap on Hammock Cove, Antigua.

Hammock Cove is situated right alongside Devils Bridge National Park making for killer sunset views, just a five-minute stroll up the way. If you want to be even lazier than that, the entire property is made up of villas wrapping the coast for a variety of views and privacy levels that are just perfect to enjoy your own plunge pool and terrace as the day ends.

What We Loved:

The service and attention to detail were unmatched. The staff gets to know you quickly in a lowkey old friend type of way and greets you by name effortlessly whenever possible. When we arrived, we were taken to the main bar so we could have cocktail in hand while they arranged our luggage and check in. With premium brands on display I almost made the mistake of ordering a trusty favorite when the bartender, Derek, politely insists I let him choose my first drink. With just a quick description of our usual preferences he whips up a fresh whiskey lime cocktail for my husband and a spicy guava tequila creation for me that we craved every night at happy hour for the duration of the trip. You are then greeted by your first ambassador and equipped with a small cellphone so that you can contact them or your nighttime ambassador for whatever you need. This is how you make and change dinner reservations, order room service, request a re-stock of your mini bar or whatever else you should need assistance with. It was so nice to have someone who was just a call away but not checking on you should you want some quiet time. Your ambassador then gives you a quick golf cart tour of the property and your accommodations before leaving you to settle in.

The villas were immaculate. Plenty of space to spread out a walk-in closet, dual shower and a king size bed looking out to your pool and terrace. We spent most mornings waking up slow, opening the curtains, letting in the sea view and ordering room service breakfast. Then it was down to the beach to lounge some more. The beach service was just as amazing. The staff laid down towels as we arrived and brought infused ice water while we settled in and quickly got to know our drinks orders to accompany lunch. When we were feeling up to a bit more activity there were special lunch events on the dock every other day such as oysters and bubbles or caviar tastings. If it was a cloudy day the sushi making class and cooking demo were fun too. All were very small groups and relaxed atmosphere like you are cooking with friends.

After making use of our mini bar on our villa terrace, we would get ready for dinner at The Lighthouse, the only fine dining restaurant on property. After lazy suntanning days, getting dressed up and heading to the candlelit dinner was a great change of pace. The menu was different every night and Chef Marco would pop around the dining room to chat about the new dishes. With a large menu of small plates, you can create your own multi-course meal to suit your cravings that day. I enjoyed the yellowtail crudo and seafood mains most nights while my husband loved the homemade gnocchi and grilled steak or pork options. The kitchen designed the perfect menu for all palettes. After a big meal we would end the night chatting with the Rum Bar’s bartenders and play darts or bring our cocktails to the game room to play some pool or backgammon. Or there was always the option to order late night coal fired pizzas to the room and get one last dip in our private plunge pool. My favorite was opening the doors and watching the quick moving Caribbean storms pass from bed with lightning touching down on the ocean and moving out just as quickly as it came in.

Antigua offers much more adventure for those who need to be a bit more active. There are great hiking trails, tons of beautiful beaches to explore, cute port towns with shopping and dining options, amazing snorkeling or diving opportunities, the list goes on. We loved taking a quick boat ride out into the ocean to swim with stingrays. The team that organized our adventure goes out with visitors regularly bringing squid and fish treats so that they remember their boat and know when to come say hi. The result is a completely voluntary meet up of these beautiful creatures to entertain us for a short bit until lunchtime is over. The locals have a deep respect for the water and beaches as well as tourism, which you hear in every conversation. They are proud to help maintain a place so many people enjoy visiting and are ready to welcome you!
