Our Recent Stay: South Africa

This November, the Explorateur Travel team embarked on an unforgettable FAM trip to South Africa, immersing themselves in the diverse beauty and culture of this extraordinary destination. With eight of our dedicated advisors, we explored the vibrant city of Johannesburg, experienced the thrill of a safari, and indulged in the charm of Cape Town and its stunning winelands. From breathtaking hikes to wine tastings and even shark cage diving, this adventure was more than just a journey—it was an opportunity to deepen our expertise, forge stronger bonds, and curate firsthand experiences to share with our clients.

Our Arrival in Johannesburg

Our two nights in Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest international hub (with super convenient direct flights from Atlanta and New York), were the perfect way to kick off our adventure before heading out on safari. We stayed at the stunning Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa. Half of our group dove into the city’s energy with a tour of Joburg and Soweto, soaking up the culture and history, while the other half took things slow, unwinding at The Saxon Spa. We capped it all off with a site inspection and a fabulous dinner at Qunu, complete with delicious wine pairings and live music—an unforgettable way to wrap up our time in this vibrant city!

On Safari at Royal Malewane

Our stay at Royal Malewane was nothing short of extraordinary, offering the perfect blend of luxury, culture, and adventure. Before we even checked in, we were greeted by an unforgettable sight at the watering hole—two lionesses lounging nearby, an elephant casually grazing, and even a hippo out of the water, setting the tone for the incredible wildlife experiences to come. We enjoyed thrilling game drives that brought us even closer to South Africa’s remarkable animals and a magical private bush dinner under the stars, complete with the vibrant energy of local dancers who brought the evening to life.

During our visit, we toured all five of Royal Malewane’s stunning safari properties: The Lodge, with its timeless elegance and exceptional service; The Farmstead, an intimate retreat perfect for privacy and exclusivity; Waterside, a contemporary haven ideal for families and groups; Africa House, a private villa that feels like home in the heart of the bush; and the soon-to-open Masiya Baroque Camp, which will combine classic safari luxury with bold design. Each property left us in awe, showcasing unique design, thoughtful details, and a deep connection to the surrounding wilderness.

While the wildlife, luxurious accommodations, and unforgettable experiences at Royal Malewane were truly extraordinary, the heart of our stay was the incredible staff. From the expert guides who brought the bush to life, to the warm and attentive housekeeping team, and everyone in between, their genuine care and hospitality made our time at Royal Malewane unforgettable. Their passion and dedication elevated every moment, making us feel not just like guests, but like part of the Royal Malewane family.

Cape Town a City of Possibilities

Our four nights in Cape Town showcased the incredible variety this vibrant city has to offer. We soaked up breathtaking views from Table Mountain’s iconic cable car, relaxed on stunning beaches, explored the lush wine lands with world-class tastings, and even got our adrenaline pumping with some thrilling adventures (hello-shark diving). From its natural beauty to its cultural charm, Cape Town captivated us at every turn

Where to stay in Cape Town

During our time in Cape Town, we had the pleasure of staying at two of the city’s most iconic hotels.

Belmond Mount Nelson

We began our stay at Belmond Mount Nelson, a family-friendly retreat that combines timeless charm with a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. The hotel offers lush gardens, spacious rooms, and a wealth of amenities, including a beautiful outdoor pool, a kid’s club for younger guests, and a world-class spa for ultimate relaxation. The dining options were also exceptional, with the signature restaurant, Planet Restaurant, offering a sophisticated menu, and the casual Tapas Bar serving delicious bites. Whether enjoying afternoon tea on the terrace or exploring the nearby city attractions, Belmond Mount Nelson provided a perfect home base.

The Silo

Next, we experienced the vibrant and luxurious The Silo, which is a stunning blend of contemporary art, design, and breathtaking views. Located in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, the hotel’s bold and modern design, housed in a former grain silo, creates a unique and vibrant atmosphere. The Silo is renowned for its extraordinary art collection, displayed throughout the property, adding an artistic flair to the stay. Amenities include a rooftop pool with panoramic views of the city and Table Mountain, a luxury spa offering a full range of treatments, and exquisite dining at The Silo Restaurant, which serves innovative, locally inspired dishes. The combination of luxurious accommodations, unmatched service, and striking design made The Silo a standout in Cape Town’s hospitality scene.

During our time in Cape Town, we also had the opportunity to visit several other incredible properties, including Ellerman House, with its stunning ocean views and world-class art collection; the lively One&Only Cape Town, known for its incredible dining options; and the breathtaking 12 Apostles Hotel, nestled among dramatic cliffs and offering a serene, scenic setting. Each hotel provided a distinct experience, highlighting the diverse range of accommodations Cape Town has to offer.
